The Toyota Yaris (sold in different markets as the Toyota Vitz and Toyota Echo) is a line of subcompact cars first launched by Toyota in 1999, designed by Sotiris Kovos. The Yaris is a 3 and 5 door hatchback automobile.
In Europe, the Americas, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, the Vitz is sold as the Yaris Liftback (or simply Yaris). Up to 2005, the Vitz was known as the Echo Hatchback in Canada, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand, with the Toyota Platz sedan being known as the Echo; the first generation Vitz was never sold in the US. Since 2006, the Vitz and Belta are marketed in US/Canada as the Yaris Hatchback and Yaris, respectively.
The Toyota Belta sedan, which replaced the Toyota Platz, shares underpinnings with the Vitz. However, while the Vitz was designed at Toyota's European design studios, the Belta was designed at Toyota's Japanese design studios – two completely different design projects for similar cars marketed toward different demographics. While the outgoing Vitz and Platz models look and feel virtually alike (the only things the cars don't share is the front clip, lights, rear doors, and bodies from behind the B-pillar), the new Vitz and Belta are much more subtly related. Sharing a similar but different dashboard, they do not employ the same components. The cars share only a frame and the drivetrain options. The sheet metal is completely different.
Toyota Motor Corp. has put on the market since July 1, 2008 two models of Mark X cars with special specifications. They are the 250G "F Package Smart Edition" and the 250G Four "F Package Smart Edition."
Based on the 250G and 250G Four, the two models have the smart entry and start system, discharge headlamp, and 16-inch aluminum wheel in addition to the furnishings of the standard F Package.
They are priced at 2,656,500 yen for the model based on the 250G and 2,971,500 yen for the model based on the 250G Four.

Toyota asserts that the all-new 2007 Toyota Camry's looks are a bold and assertive answer to the ordinary styling of the previous car. Toyota may be attempting to respond to critics who consider the Camry an appliance approach, as opposed to making an emotional appeal, to the car business. But Toyota's conservative approach with the Camry has earned it the top sales spot for a passenger car during eight of the last nine years. The new design allows a roomier cabin with a host of fine features. Both four- and six-cylinder engines have added power with good fuel economy and excellent emissions ratings. An auxiliary audio input is standard, and Bluetooth is available separately from the navigation package.
Upside: The new Toyota Camry is smooth and quiet over a variety of road surfaces, and handling is precise without punishing occupants with a harsh ride. The four-cylinder engine has adequate power for family chores and delivers 25mpg/34mpg (city and highway, respectively) fuel economy with a standard transmission. For added enthusiasm, the 3.5-liter V-6 from the Avalon model provides 268 horsepower, enough to surprise some sports sedans at a stoplight. All instrument trims feature backlit Optitron displays and an oil change reminder. All audio systems have MP3 and WMA playback capability, digital sound processors, and an auxiliary input for iPod and other portable audio devices. Bluetooth and GPS navigation are available as options.
Downside: For buyers who seek emotion in their ride, the Camry is still more sensible than arousing. Four-cylinder fuel economy with the automatic transmission, Toyota's most popular combination, has decreased slightly in highway EPA rating despite a change from five to six speeds. That's in vivid contrast to the gain in both power and economy of the six-cylinder offering. Base prices remain competitive with other midsize offerings but quickly escalate with the addition of comfort and convenience options.
Outlook: Despite aggressive competition from Kia with a similar-size, full-featured entrant at a lower price and Ford's competent new Fusion model, the Camry should keep its first place title. The buttoned-down styling is clean and contemporary, and the quality remains class-leading. Camry will also include a hybrid model that will help position the popular sedan as delivering high economy and leading technology. Finally, the addition of useful features will appeal to careful shoppers.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Toyota Camry has been the best-selling car in this country for the past four years, and for eight of the past nine years. It's been in the top few for even longer. I see numerous examples from the previous three generations, models going back to 1992, on a regular basis, and even a few earlier ones, going all the way back to the Camry's debut in 1983. Over six and a half million Camrys have been sold in America since then. The words ``rare'' and ``exotic'' will never be applied to the Toyota Camry.
With its position at the top of the sales charts, the Camry is a serious target for all competitors. Toyota has recently made their jobs much more difficult by replacing the fifth-generation Camry, introduced in 2002, with a new and very different sixth generation debuting early as a model year 2007 vehicle.
Little about the 2007 Camry has been left unchanged. Most apparent is new styling, bolder and more international than previously seen on a Camry. Overall size is not much changed, but a longer wheelbase and wider track translate to even more interior space. Crashworthiness has been improved by changes to both materials and design. Wheels and tires are larger, and all models feature four-wheel antilock disc brakes.
And ``all models'' has more significance, with an expanded lineup. After all, the Camry didn't reach the peak of popularity by being a niche vehicle. Even the entry-level CE grade is well-equipped, with power windows. mirrors, and locks, Optitron backlit gauges, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, six-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system with a jack for an external MP3 player, and seven air bags. The core-model LE adds remote entry, a power driver' seat, and a long list of available options. The SE has gotten sportier, with an aero body kit, extra chassis reinforcement, and a specially-tuned suspension. The premium XLE gets as standard equipment many of the LE's options, and upscale options including a DVD navigation system, leather upholstery, and a keyless push-button starting system. For the first time, there is a Camry Hybrid model, but that's another vehicle for another week.
The standard engine is all non-hybrid 2007 Camrys is an upgraded version of Toyota's 2AZ-FE 2.4-liter four-cylinder, now with 158 horsepower. It's matched to a five-speed manual or automatic transmission. Optional in all but the CE is a new 3.5-liter V6, with 268 horsepower. It comes with a six-speed automatic with manual-shift mode. In contrast to the usual press fleet-spec fully-loaded premium model, in this case an XLE V6 with the works, my test car for the past week has been a four-cylinder LE with a few key options. It's the most popular model, and for good reason. The Camry LE four-cylinder may be statistically average, but with good power and economy, plenty of passenger and trunk space, and typically Toyota high build quality, it's the benchmark family sedan.
APPEARANCE: In styling the new Camry, Toyota wanted something less conservative. But a careful balance needed to be struck, as too-radical styling could be invitation to disaster. With its sharp, European-inspired looks, the 2007 Camry should be successful. Its combination of rounded shapes and chiseled character lines makes it look smaller than its immediate predecessor, but it's not. While the two are equal in length, the new Camry is over an inch longer in wheelbase, an inch wider, and a touch lower. The passenger cabin is noticeably longer, with the base of the windshield pushed forward and the bottom of the backlight moved toward the rear. The new Toyota look pioneered on the Yaris is at the front, with the corporate badge prominently displayed in a piece of sheetmetal that drops down into the grille, giving that grille a winged appearance. It's flanked by long, low headlights with projector-beam low beams, multifaceted high beams, and integrated turn signals. Twin character lines in the hood, blistered front fenders, and a strong shoulder line give a muscular look that has not been seen before on a Camry. The rear window and trunklid pay homage to a trend-setting and very expensive Bavarian luxury sedan, while the bulging taillights provide interest to the rear.
COMFORT: The extra length made by increasing the 2007 Camry's wheelbase all went into the passenger cabin. There is more front and rear legroom, and the front seats have a longer range of adjustment. New seats further improve space, and comfort. All grades feature an upscale interior design that looks like it was taken from Toyota's upscale relatives at Lexus, with a flowing two-tone instrument panel and easily-visible backlit ``Optitron'' gauges. Materials are high-quality synthetics, with textured material for the dash, a thick rubberized steering wheel rim, and grippy velour-like upholstery. In the LE, the driver's seat is power-adjustable. Seat comfort is very good, as is visibility, and the tilt- and telescope-adjustable steering wheel aids driver comfort and control. Although it is contoured for two, three people can fit in the rear bench, helped by a nearly flat floor. Trunk space is very good, and a low liftover height and the 60/40 split of the rear seatback come in handy when loading oversized cargo. Even the standard audio system has a jack to connect an external audio device, like an MP3 player or iPod. The optional JBL sound system also can play MP3 CDs in addition to regular ones, and provides very good sound quality.
SAFETY: Safety is improved by the new Camry's stronger structure, larger antilock brakes, and standard brake assist. Seven airbags - dual front, front side, side curtain, and a driver's knee bag - are standard in all grades.
RIDE AND HANDLING: The 2007 Camry's improved structural rigidity results from both stronger materials, like the high-strength steel used for B-pillar and rocker panel reinforcement, and new design. While its fully-independent suspension is similar in basic design to the previous model, with MacPherson struts in front and dual-link struts in the rear, the suspension geometry and spring and shock tunings have all been changed. The result is a ride that is slightly firmer, for better handling, but still very comfortable and well-damped. Comfort is paramount, but its controlled comfort. Steering effort is low, but not too low. Despite the longer wheelbase, the new Camry has a tighter turning circle than last year's version, for easier parking.
PERFORMANCE: With 158 horsepower and 161 lb-ft of torque, power from the Camry's four-cylinder engine is more than adequate for everyday use. While displacement of the dual overhead cam, 16-valve powerplant has remained the same, at 2.4 liters, internal changes have reduced noise and vibration and improved power output. If a quick glance at the specs makes it appear to be peaky, with the torque peak at 4000 rpm and the horsepower peak at 6000 rpm, don't believe only numbers. Torque is good right off idle, making the five-speed automatic an excellent match. Good shift logic and the engine's broad torque band ensure both performance and economy - the transmission quickly downshifts under full-throttle acceleration, and doesn't upshift until near the 6200-rpm redline. When descending a steep grade, or sometimes merely slowing toward a stop, the transmission unobtrusively downshifts, for better engine braking. Fuel economy, rated 24 mpg city and 33 highway by the EPA, and around 26 mpg in mixed city and highway driving, is good for a car with as much room as the Camry, and it runs on regular unleaded. I never felt the need for a V6 during my week with the car.
CONCLUSIONS: With new style and increased space, the 2007 Toyota Camry is better than ever.

Sure, the Naples Winter Wine Festival is, by name, all about the wine.
But the festival’s auction has long been about the cars. The past few years have seen the latest offerings from the likes of Maserati and Bentley auctioned off for enormous sums. Last year, the first Bentley Brooklands coupe to be sold in the United States brought in $450,000.
In 2006, collectors spent $3.3 million on two cars at the auction, $2 million for the first Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe and $1.3 million for a Bentley Continental GTC.
So scrolling through the auction lots, I was surprised to find that this year’s hot car was an Audi.
An Audi?!
I know the recession is hitting everyone’s wallet pretty hard, but there’s a big difference between a Rolls (the car of choice for heads of state, tycoons and oligarchs worldwide) and Audis (the car of choice of dermatologists and corporate lawyers).
To be sure, Audis are nothing to sneeze at. They have a reputation as high-quality performance sedans. And they have that cool new commercial where Jason Statham tries various luxury getaway cars until making a successful escape in a new Audi S8.
Still, the company’s entry-level A3 starts at a reasonable $27,000. There’s no such thing as an entry-level Bentley.
Then I saw a picture of the car the festival was auctioning off — the Audi R8. With it’s Lamborghini-esque hull and futuristic styling it looks more in line with an exotic sports car than something your podiatrist would drive.
When talking to the wine festival’s public relations folks I had one question — “Can I test drive it?”
I expected to be shot down immediately. Instead I was met with a chorus of “I don’t see why not.” So on a sunny January afternoon, I headed to Audi of Naples to get a closer look.
Sales manager Troy Head gave me the lowdown on the tech specs (zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds, top speed 187 miles per hour, but not the 15 miles per gallon fuel economy) plus a lot of other surely important numbers and details, all of which I pretended to understand lest they revoke my test-driving privileges.
Then Head took me for a spin. He deftly maneuvered the car through the winding road behind the Naples Airport.
Then it was my turn. Head let me take the car out in more real-world driving situations, also known as Airport-Pulling Road at 2 p.m. So much for my dream of getting that puppy up to 150 miles per hour.
The Japanese B-segment market is indeed a hot one and is dominated by the H and T badges, despite honest efforts by other manufacturers such as Suzuki to make an impact with cars such as the SX4 sedan. The City and the Vios remain the champions of the under RM80k non-national sedan market and are the target of many people who long to break out of what they feel is the curse of Proton ownership, so naturally the launch of the new Honda City this year was very eagerly awaited. The new City is blessed with good looks and now that the launch and fanfare are over, it’s time to take a good look at the car and see if it is indeed as good as it looks.
Read my full driving impressions after the jump.
While the design of the City is not perfect, it’s way better looking than the odd hatchback with a boot slapped previous generation City. It’s also got a more classic sedan look to it with none of that A-pillar triangular window stuff. A sports sedan to be exact. I still like the shape as much as I did when I first saw it on the spyshots on the internet, especially the white one transported in China. It’s just too bad Honda isn’t offering the car in white here, in fact there are no white Hondas on sale except for the Type R, but I was told white is being added to the CKD paint process soon.
The top of the line model gets foglamps but I kind of prefer the bumper without the foglamps as somehow it helps make the car look wider and shorter. Chrome for the door handles are a nice touch, while the fuel lid opens up with just a touch much like more pricey European cars.
With the new City, you no longer get that airy feeling that was present in the old City. This is the result of the seating position being much more car-like rather than mini-MPV-like, thanks to Honda distancing the City from its boot-less Jazz sibling. While the Ultra Seats are gone, things like using the bottom of the rear seats to store an umbrella is a great idea. Never again do you have to place it in some random area on the floor of your car and get your whole carpet/mats soaked more than necessary.
Good just got better in the SUV/crossover segment with the redesigned 2010 Lexus RX 350. Enhancements to the interior, exterior and engine give luxury crossover enthusiasts and Lexus fans a reason to be excited.
The freshly redesigned RX 350 is like an upscale Toyota Venza and competes with the Acura MDX and Lincoln MKX. Buyers get a choice of two trims: all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive. A robust 3.5-liter, 275-horsepower V-6 engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The RX 350 can tow up to 3,500 pounds and receives 18 mpg in the city and 24-25 mpg on the highway.
The RX 350 is wider and longer giving it a wagon-like stance and more of a carlike look. On the inside, the RX 350 seats five and the backseat folds in a 40/20/40 split that reclines and adjusts forward and backward. The impressive Voice-Recognition Technology offers a much higher recognition rate and controls Bluetooth, navigation, climate and audio controls by using normal, everyday speech. Another Lexus gem is the Heads-up Display system that projects navigation directions, audio information and vehicle speed on the windshield in the front of you. One of the coolest features you’ll find in any car is Lexus’ Remote Touch system, which uses a knob to navigate menus with a mouse-like arrow cursor on the dashboard display screen. And not to be forgotten, a 15-speaker Mark Levinson® Premium Surround Sound Audio System uses 7.1-channel architecture and 330 watts that will immerse you in a crystal clear wall of sound.
When it comes to safety, the RX 350 is as innovative as ever. Passengers are virtually wrapped in the 10 airbags of every shape, size, and technological deployment option. A four-sensor, four-channel Anti-Lock Braking System with Brake Assist provides excellent control and supplemental braking power. Vehicle Stability Control measures wheel speed, steering angle and yaw rate to detect a loss of wheel traction. A direct Tire Pressure Monitoring System helps you keep the tires properly inflated, activating a light on the instrument panel when pressure is critically low. A backup camera and Pre-Collision System are important in avoiding accidents in the first place.
With plenty of utility, safety features and a plethora of cutting-edge technology, the newly redesigned 2010 Lexus RX 350 rests at the pinnacle of the luxury crossover class.
Vehicle Overview
Lexus revamped its midsize ES sedan for 2007 with a larger engine and a new look. In keeping with Lexus' naming conventions, the numeric portion of the ES name reflects the size of the engine: 350 stands for a 3.5-liter V-6 engine. The ES 350 competes with the Acura TL and Lincoln MKZ.
New for 2009
The ES 350 remains relatively unchanged for 2009 other than the addition of a new exterior color.
Exterior
Even after its 2007 redesign, the ES 350's basic teardrop shape was still familiar to the brand's faithful. The sedan is about the same size as its predecessor, although the car gained 2 inches in wheelbase and more than an inch of track. Standard features include: moonroof, 17-inch alloy wheels and dual exhaust tips. The ES 350 is available in a new paint color: Matador Red Mica and a panoramic glass roof is optional.
Interior
The ES 350 has 42.2 inches of front legroom and 35.9 inches of rear legroom. Hip room is 52.8 inches in back and 55.9 inches in front. Push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control and 10-way power-adjustable front seats come standard, while a 14-speaker, 300-watt Mark Levinson audio system and navigation system with rearview backup camera are optional.
Under the Hood
The ES 350's 3.5-liter V-6 drives the front wheels through an automatic transmission. A 3.5-liter V-6 making 272-horsepower and 254 pounds-feet of torque engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with clutchless-manual mode is quite impressive.
Safety
An available Adaptive Front Lighting System allows the headlights to swivel when rounding curves. Standard options include: all-disc antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability system, driver and front-passenger knee airbags, side curtain airbags, side-impact airbags for the front seats, available rear side-impact airbags, while Lexus' Pre-Collision System is optional.
Vehicle Overview
The hybrid Lexus GS 450h emphasizes performance over fuel efficiency, with its gasoline engine and hybrid motors combining to make 340 horsepower, which about matches the 342-hp GS 460. The GS 450h has no hybrid competitors. The hybrid is a smidge faster than the GS 460. Lexus says the GS 450h can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, while the GS 460 takes 5.4 seconds. The GS 450h's combined city/highway gas mileage is 23 mpg. That means it sips gas on par with the V-6-powered GS 350. There's a more compelling case when it's compared with the V-8-equipped GS 460, which has a lower combined city/highway estimate of around 20 mpg.
New for 2009
The GS 450h receives no significant changes for 2009.
Exterior
Virtually identical to the GS 350 and GS 460 sedans, the GS 450h sports Lexus' familiar face with its steeply raked headlights and thick C-pillars. An adaptive suspension continually senses road conditions to modify damping appropriately. A Sport mode incorporates tighter damping, and an optional active stabilizer system mitigates body roll even more. Several features that are optional on other GS sedans are standard on the GS 450h, including: moonroof, high-intensity-discharge headlights, rear park assist, rain-sensing windshield wipers and 18-inch wheels.
Interior
An electric-power meter replaces the tachometer in the leftmost instrument pod, while a dashboard information screen displays energy consumption statistics and an animation of real-time power routing. Otherwise, the GS 450h's interior is identical to other GS models. Because of intrusion from the hybrid system's two battery packs, trunk volume shrinks from 12.7 cubic feet in non-hybrid GS models to 7.5 cubic feet in the GS 450h. Standard interior features include: heated leather seats, ventilated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and 10-speaker audio system. Available features include: electric rear sunshade and navigation system with 14-speaker audio system.
Under the Hood
The GS 450h's direct-injection, 3.5-liter V-6 engine is shared with Lexus' smaller IS 350 sedan. The 3.5-liter V-6 makes 292-horsepower, not including the electric motors. The V-6 teams with two electric motors — one providing power during startup, the other boosting acceleration — for a combined 339-horsepower. Energy is created by regenerative braking to charge the batteries for electric motors and the engine shuts off when car is at a standstill.
Safety
A full complement of electronic safety features centers around Lexus' Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system, which is standard. Other standard safety features include: an electronic stability system, antilock brakes, electronic steering, electronic brakes, and an adaptive front lighting system swivels the headlights several degrees during turns to better illuminate corners. Front knee, side-impact and side curtain airbags come standard, while an available adaptive cruise control can sense impending collisions and alert the driver.
Vehicle Overview
The Lexus GS 350 is a rear-wheel-drive sports sedan with a powerful V-6 engine and available all-wheel drive. The GS 350 competes with midsize sport sedans like the BMW 535i, Mercedes-Benz E350, Cadillac STS V-6 and Acura RL. To get a V-8 with the GS, look at the more expensive GS 460. The hybrid GS 450h uses a gas-electric V-6 powertrain.
New for 2009
The GS 350 receives no significant changes for 2009.
Exterior
Lexus says the sedan has a futuristic look. The GS 350 has a long hood, a very short rear deck and wide, tapered C-pillars that flow back to the car's rear. Long side glass and a steep back window enhance the car's performance image. 17-inch wheels are standard, and 18-inch wheels are optional. A moonroof and power rear sunshade are also optional.
Interior
Five occupants fit inside the GS 350. An optional navigation system comes with Bluetooth, voice activation and a rearview camera. A 7-inch dashboard screen works with the navigation system and also serves as a monitor for the Intuitive Park Assist system. The refined interior includes an aluminum-face gauge cluster, 10-way power front seats with heated leather upholstery, available fan ventilation, push-button start, dual climate control, 10-speaker, six-CD stereo, 12.7 cubic feet of trunk space and an available Mark Levinson surround-sound system with 14 speakers.
Under the Hood
All-wheel drive is available for the GS 350. Hydraulic controls in the system vary the front/rear torque split from 30/70 to 50/50 and provide what Lexus calls the performance advantages of rear-wheel drive with the traction of all-wheel drive. A 3.5-liter, 303-horsepwoer V-6 engine making 303 horsepower is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.
Safety
An option group includes adaptive laser cruise control and a Pre-Collision System that helps determine if a crash is imminent and takes appropriate steps if it is. Other options include park assist and adaptive headlights that swivel with the front wheels. Standard safety features include: driver and front-passenger knee airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags for both rows. Four-wheel disc antilock brakes, electronic stability system and an optional Pre-Collision System incorporates active braking.
Vehicle Overview
It took an awfully long time, but in 2008 Lexus finally threw its noodle into the alphabet soup of automotive performance variants. Where Audi's A4 comes as a souped-up (oh, the irony) RS 4, the BMW 3 Series comes as an M3 and the Acura TL comes as a TL Type-S, the Lexus IS compact sport sedan offers the IS-F, the first but definitely not the last in Lexus' high-performance line. Equipped with a 416-horsepower, 5.0-liter V-8, the IS-F is claimed to sprint from zero to 60 mph in less than 4.9 seconds.
New for 2009
A new instrument cluster and a two-tone interior mark the IS-F's changes for 2009.
Exterior
Cosmetic exterior and interior changes are always part of the high-performance package. Lexus makes several changes for '09, but these items serve a purpose, managing airflow and making room for the larger, taller engine.
IS-F exterior changes compared to the IS 250/IS 350 include: wider fenders, flared bumper with a larger mouth, vents behind the front wheels, high-domed hood, quad tailpipes, small trunklid spoiler and 19-inch wheels with performance tires.
Interior
IS-F interior changes compared to the IS 250/IS 350: body-hugging sport seats in black, white or new two-tone, F logos all around, carbon fiber trim and chrome shift paddles.
Under the Hood
The 416-hp V-8 cranks out 350 pounds-feet of torque; the redline is 7,000 rpm. The car has one transmission — with enough gears for two. The eight-speed automatic has a manual mode and steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles. There is no true manual. Lexus says the transmission, which it calls direct-sport shift, changes gears within one-tenth of a second and executes rev matching for smoother downshifts and decreased wear. Not to be confused with some automated-manual transmissions, like Audi's S tronic, this one uses a fluidic torque converter.
The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Upgraded brakes with larger, cross-drilled discs and six- and two-piston calipers in the front and rear, respectively. Brembo-brand calipers are gloss black and bear the Lexus logo, while upgraded springs, shocks, stabilizer bars, bushings and steering tuning are all optimized for performance driving. The IS-F sits 1 inch lower than the IS 250/IS 350 and boasts an electronic stability system with special mode between fully engaged and fully defeated. Sport mode allows more wheelspin and sliding before interrupting and keeping you on track.
Safety
Standard safety features include: knee airbags, side-impact torso-protection airbags, side curtain airbags in both rows, seat belt pretensioners for front seats and backseats and antilock brakes.

BMW presented the racing version of the new BMW M3 at the Chicago Auto Show. Powered by a 485 bhp eight cylinder engine, this impressive race car has been designed to compete in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) beginning in 2009. The car is based on the fourth generation of the BMW M3, the high-performance sports car produced by BMW M GmbH.
BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen says: "With the sporting genes of the production BMW M3 being clearly evident, developing a racing version of the car was the next logical step. The fact that the road-going vehicle is fitted with a V8 engine as standard provided us with an ideal base. However, the BMW M3 is more than a race car, it has achieved legendary status amongst race fans across the globe. I am convinced that this unique story of the BMW M3 racing cars will now be expanded upon by the addition of further chapters."
BMW's 2009 entry into the American Le Mans Series will be driven by a partnership between BMW of North America, LLC and Rahal Letterman Racing, co-owned by US motorsport legend Bobby Rahal.
"We are very pleased to be returning to the American Le Mans Series with our latest generation BMW M3," states Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO, BMW of North America. "Sports car racing has been part of BMW of North America's history practically from day one. Just two weeks after the company was incorporated in March 1975, a BMW CSL won the Twelve Hours of Sebring. We are confident that the fourth generation M3 will continue the legacy of its two predecessors which combined to win six manufacturer's championships over nine seasons in US sports car racing. As it has been in the past we believe the ALMS is the ideal venue to showcase the potential of the newest BMW M3."
Echoing that sentiment Bobby Rahal adds, "BMW has an illustrious racing heritage. Rahal Letterman Racing is eagerly anticipating, not only becoming part of that heritage, but helping to enhance it. Our dedication to this project will be without equal and we look forward to racing at the front of the grid with BMW in the years to come."
Martin Birkmann, Motorsports Manager, BMW of North America, adds: "We are very excited to announce our return to the American Le Mans Series with the 4th generation M3 at the same time as the road car hits the BMW showrooms. We are also excited about our partnership with Rahal Letterman Racing. The ALMS offers racing where we can compete against the finest and most renowned automotive brands from Europe and the US. Motorsport is deeply ingrained in the BMW DNA and we are pleased to partner with an organization which shares that same heritage. Rahal Letterman Racing is the perfect partner to be behind the wheel of our new BMW M3 racing effort."
The BMW M3 Race Version: Sportiness personified.
In the course of developing the race version of the BMW M3, BMW's engineers were faced with an ambitious task: to improve upon the sportiness of an already sporting car. A better base would, though, be difficult to find. In standard form the vehicle delivers powerful dynamics and sporting aesthetics. Thanks to an eight cylinder engine producing 414 bhp, BMW's customers are provided with a unique driving experience.
Those engine blocks, cast in BMW's light alloy foundry in Landshut - the very source of BMW's Formula One castings - selected for race duty need to withstand even more power: the BMW P65 race engine delivers 485 bhp.
In order to enable the BMW M3 to make full use of this performance on the race circuit, the experts in Munich have not concentrated solely on the engine, but have race-tuned the chassis as well. The race version of the BMW M3 is wider and significantly lighter than its production equivalent, enabling it to perfectly transmit the power of its V8 to the track. Widespread use of carbon-reinforced plastic (CRP) provides proof of substantial weight reduction. As with the production version, the race car's roof is manufactured from this high-tech material.
The race version of the BMW M3 is clearly aimed at the top echelon of motorsport. As such, it is no surprise to discover that in the course of its development, begun in mid-2007, numerous Formula One techniques were applied. These include computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and wind tunnel analyses, both of which have ensured the best possible aerodynamic package for the BMW M3.
Intelligent control systems have been incorporated throughout the BMW M3. The POWER400 control unit actuates all the accessories fitted to the car, such as lights, wipers, etc., via two bus systems. Traditional relays and fuses are thus eliminated, ensuring considerable weight saving, improved reliability and ease of application. The functions of the BMW P65 engine are managed by an ECU 408 electronic control unit, developed in-house by BMW Motorsport. The software and applications, too, have been developed by the experts in Munich.
An intensive test program, during which the performance of the race car will be honed by BMW Motorsport, looms for the BMW M3 over the coming months. Development drivers will be BMW works drivers Andy Priaulx (GBR), J?Müller (GER) and Augusto Farfus (BRA), currently racing in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC). The aim is, after all, for the BMW M3 to be an immediate front-runner upon its comeback to the American Le Mans Series.
BMW Racing in North America
BMW's return to race track coincides with the fourth generation M3's entry into North American showrooms, a pattern familiar to those eager to follow the newest chapter in BMW's storied racing history.
After the CSL's, the 70's ended with the 320 Turbo. Known affectionately as the "Flying Brick" the flame-throwing coupes delighted sports car racing fans with their signature exhaust fire. The program also added reams of data to BMW's turbocharging technology, information that would help a BMW-powered Brabham win the 1983 Formula One World Championship.
In the late 1980's BMW of North America entered IMSA's top prototype category with the BMW GTP. The program netted only one win, but added incalculable experience to the men and women responsible for racing here in the US. When the second generation M3 debuted in 1995, the company was ready for a major effort in production car racing that continued through 2006 and the third generation M3.
When the checkered flag fell on the last race of the 2006 season, BMW of North America wrote the final page of the most successful chapter to date of its 31-year motorsport story. From 1995 through 2006, BMW of North America's M3 racing program drove to 53 wins in 118 races entered, adding 14 championship trophies to corporate display cases and a shine on the Roundel like never before.
Return to familiar territory.
BMW can look back on numerous successes and titles in the ALMS. The BMW V12 LMR prototype won the inaugural ALMS race in 1999 at the Twelve Hours of Sebring. In 1999 and 2000 the BMW V12 LMR went on to score six victories. For 2001 BMW switched to the GT Class, winning everything in sight with the BMW M3 GTR, which was developed specifically for the ALMS: BMW works driver J?Müller claimed the drivers' championship, Team BMW Motorsport took the team title and BMW won the manufacturers' championship in the company's most important market.
BMW in the American Le Mans Series.
The American Le Mans Series is far from virgin territory for BMW. During both 1999, the series' inaugural season, and the following year, the company celebrated major successes in North America. Under the management of the Schnitzer Team's Charly Lamm, five BMW drivers scored a total of six victories with the 580 bhp BMW V12 LMR. In 1999 the impressive BMW V12 LMR simultaneously won the very race which served as inspiration for the ALMS: the Le Mans 24 Hour Race.
In 2001 BMW deployed a new car. For the third ALMS season a switch was made from the Prototype category to the GT class using the BMW M3 GTR, a totally new development powered by an eight cylinder engine delivering 450 bhp. Two operations, Team BMW Motorsport from Germany and the US-domiciled BMW Team PTG, entered two cars each. The Team BMW Motorsport entries were driven by J?Müller/JJ Lehto and Fredrik Ekblom/Dirk Müller respectively, with Hans-Joachim Stuck and Boris Said, and Niclas Jonsson and Bill Auberlen doing driver duties in the Team BMW PTG Team-entered cars.
The debut season of the BMW M3 GTR rapidly became a success story: BMW drivers mounted the top step of the podium seven times, with six pole positions falling their way. BMW works driver J?Müller captured the drivers' title, Team BMW Motorsport took team honors, and BMW the manufacturers' championship. After a development program totalling less than six months BMW was able to lay claim to no less than three championships with the BMW M3 GTR.
Ultimately successful 2001 season does not start according to plan.
The 2001 season did not, though, start according to plan. At the opening race on 4 March in Fort Worth, Texas, the BMW M3 as raced during the previous year was deployed. Stuck and Said gave it their all, and placed third for BMW Team PTG. Approximately two weeks later things looked up: at the Sebring 12 Hour Race in Florida the BMW M3 GTR celebrated its track debut having undergone only cursory shakedown tests due to time pressures. However, Müller and Lehto immediately fired a shot across the bows of the opposition: they crossed the finish line of the classic race in third place, thereby ensuring BMW's first podium place with the BMW M3 GTR. "That was the car's first test drive under racing conditions," said team manager Charly Lamm.
Team BMW Motorsport thereafter crossed the Atlantic in order to amass more experience by taking in two European Le Mans Series events of 2.45 hour duration each at Donington (Great Britain), and in Jarama (Spain). Although the team suffered a double retirement in England, the Jarama race ran totally to plan: Team BMW Motorsport celebrated its first one-two via Ekblom/Dirk Müller and Lehto/J?Müller.
After jolting the auto world last year with the revolutionary design, BMW keeps consumers and the competition on edge with the 2009 X6 Sports Activity Coupe (SAC).
BMW is combining the looks and DNA of their X5 Sports Activity Vehicle and the BMW X model coupes to bring you the first-ever X6 (SAC). This combination of power, cutting edge technology and sleek design is truly unique. When considering the X6, there are two different styles - the xDrive50i and the xDrive35i. If power is what you’re looking for, then the xDrive50i is the SAC for you. It features a 4.4-liter, 400-horsepower V-8 twin-turbo engine that takes you from zero to 60mph in 5.2 seconds. The xDrive35i has a 3.0-liter, 300-horsepower V-6 twin-turbo engine that is lighter and more fuel efficient, while remaining powerful.
The X6 features the all-new Dynamic Performance Control (DPC). The DPC distributes power to the rear wheels, improving agility, traction and stability no matter what the terrain may be. This translates to premium handling with increased safety in all conditions. Other standard features include xDrive (all-wheel-drive), Dynamic Stability Control and Integrated Chassis Management.
The interior of the X6 is luxurious and spacious. It seats four with a center console separating the two rear seats. As for cargo space, there is plenty. The X6 boasts 25.6 cubic feet with the rear seats erect and 59.7 cubic feet with the seats folded. That’s enough room to fit four full-sized golf bags and four passengers. Because the X6 is a crossover, one gets the advantage of sitting higher off of the ground, while maintaining the smooth handling of a coupe. The steering wheel has several multifunction buttons that can operate phone and audio systems without the slightest distraction. One glaring omission is the lack of grab handles on both front and rear seats.
New additions include a power tailgate in the Premium Package, heated rear seats in the Cold Weather Package; and a luxurious leather-wrapped dash, included with optional Nappa Leather upholstery. The X6 competes with the Porsche Cayenne and the Mercedes-Benz M-Class.
The 2009 BMW X6 is not only a new breed of vehicle, but the embodiment of style, power and ingenuity.

Sirius Satellite Radio, Bluetooth connectivity and HD Radio are all available.
Safety is a major focus in the 335d, with available dynamic stability control, which including brake fade compensation, start-off assist, brake drying, and brake stand-by features with dynamic traction control for expert handling in all weather and road conditions. The standard 4-wheel ventilated anti-lock disc brakes with Dynamic Brake Control stop the car with authority. A standard tire pressure monitor alerts the driver to any significant drops in pressure. BMW Assist ™ gives you a direct connection to the BMW Assist Response Center, any time, day or night. If you're in an accident, need roadside assistance or have a customer service question, just push a button from within your vehicle to speak with a response specialist.
For 3 Series fans who crave ultimate performance, top-notch fuel efficiency, cutting-edge technology and classic style, the 2009 BMW 335d will certainly satisfy their appetites.
With its direct piezo gasoline injectors, twin low-mass turbochargers and air-to-air intercooling, optimum performance and economy is achieved with no loss in engine response. For the 135i Coupe, acceleration from 0-62 mph is accomplished in 5.3 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. Both engines feature on-demand engine coolant pumps that improve fuel economy and reduce parasitic losses for increased output.
The 1 Series boasts aggressive rear end styling. The trunklid has an integrated spoiler chiselled into the rear end of the car to accentuate the short rear section. On the 135i, an additional lip spoiler provides greater downforce on the rear end at high speeds.
The individual sections within the L-shaped rear taillights give the vehicle a lower, sportier look. Horizontal lights integrated in the rear light clusters offer a homogeneous lighting effect with the help of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This light design, as found on other BMW models, makes the BMW 1 Series Coupe stand out at night. Also, the Adaptive Brakelights operating in two stages in relation to brake application force are yet another feature typical of BMW, with the additional benefit of extra safety on the road.
So we’ve done that for you in four compact SUVs: the 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander, 2009 Ford Escape, 2009 Nissan Rogue and 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan. We didn’t fold the second-row seats down, as any compact SUV would be able to handle the load doing that. We also wanted to show how capable these vehicles are as family cars. When you have to tow children with you to the store, you can’t fold down seats filled with booster, convertible or infant-safety seats buckled in. Even a family of four with teenagers still needs somewhere to sit.
